Benefits of Situational Awareness

Developing Situational Awareness helps individuals to gain insight into the psychological processes involved in everyday settings where group dynamics and social influence operate – at home and in classrooms, and at work and in negotiations. It enables and encourages them to engage in mindful reflection and respond more critically to difficult or unexpected circumstances. Over time, developing these analytical skills will give people more options in social situations and increase their range of adaptive responses when they are confronted with negative or unwanted social pressures. Individuals will also gain greater clarity and depth in their ability to perceive the presence of social influence forces and their influence on cognition and behavior. We also anticipate that Situational Awareness training will help people to believe that they have the ability to initiate positive social change, to develop an increased capacity to empathize with what other people are experiencing in a given situation and to achieve a new degree of compassion that together will work to facilitate greater social engagement in some form of everyday heroism.
